Black Jack at Home

Black jack at home is best enjoyed with friends. The form of black jack usually played at home is black jack with the changing bank. This only means that unlike in the casinos, every player gets to be a dealer. The other form, which is played in the casinos, is black jack with a permanent bank. All bets are played against the dealer who is also the bank.

In black jack with the changing bank, the game can have two to fourteen players at the most. A standard card deck of 52 cards is used. Aces value at one or eleven, face cards are worth ten and the remaining cards are their numerical values i.e. ten is valued at ten, five is valued at five.

Since this game has a changing bank, there is a need to select the first banker and at the same time becomes the first dealer. Any player may shuffle the cards and distribute the cards one by one face up to each player. The player who gets a black jack, a jack of spades or a jack of clubs, automatically becomes the first banker.

The dealer shuffles the cards and asks another player to cut the deck. Before dealing the cards, burning a card must first be done. The dealer gets the top card of the stack and shows it to all the players. He then places this card face up at the bottom of the stack. Once this card has been reached, the stack needs to be shuffled and cut again for another round of cards.

For the first round, only one card is dealt to each player face down. The dealer starts with the player to his left then ends with himself. Players take a look at their cards and place their bets. Only when all the players have placed their bets can the dealer bet.

To close the deal, the dealer distributes one face up card to each player starting with the person to his left. He also gives himself a face up card.

With the objective of the game is to get a 21, naturals are when the first two cards a player has is a combination of an ace and a face card or a ten. In the instance that a dealer has a natural, all players should pay him the double of his bet. If the dealer and another player has a natural, all the other players pay the dealer the double of his bet except the other player with the natural. The player only pays the dealer the amount of his bet. If a player has a natural and the dealer does not have one, the dealer pays this player the double of his bet.

More often than not, rarely do any of the players including the dealer have a natural. When this happens, the players may draw from the deck. The dealer begins with the player to his left. He will give the player the cards he requests. The player may choose to stand after a certain number of cards as long as he doesn't go over 21. If he goes over 21, it is a bust. The player must pay the dealer.

After every player has either chosen to stand or gone bust, the dealer may draw cards for himself. If the dealer chooses to stand on a certain total, he pays to the players with the higher total and collects from the players that have the same total or less to the dealer's cards. If the dealer busts, he must pay all the remaining players in the deal.

The only time that a dealer can be changed is when a player has a natural and the dealer does not have one. After all the bets have been settled, the new dealer takes over as the new banker.
