Believe it or not, it's still generally not known the exact origin of blackjack. There are several theories which point out the roots of blackjack to a couple of French card games. "Chemin de fer" and "French Ferme" were among the games many believe blackjack evolved from. During the 18th century, a game called "Vingt-et-un", which literally means "twenty-one", became popular in French casinos. It reached the United States the following century and became widespread despite anti-gambling laws in the country. As gambling was gradually legalized in several states of the country led by Nevada in 1931, casino owners saw a rising demand of blackjack dealers as blackjack gained more and more popularity among card game enthusiasts. Profits from blackjack tables increased rapidly as people form all walks of life flocked to casinos to enjoy a game or two. With this steadily growing popularity of blackjack, game enthusiasts developed basic strategies to help improve their skills. Entering the last half of the 20th century, many books and articles were written about blackjack. In 1956 Roger Baldwin wrote an article that was published in the Journal of The American Statistical Association. This article entitled, "The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack" was the first to apply mathematic skills to the game of blackjack. This caused much stirring among the casino owners for fear of losing profits from their black jack tables. It lead casino owners to change the rules of blackjack, which did not last long due to series of protests and loss of profit due to refusal of people to play using he new rules. Years after, various articles were published that provided the readers information that could allow them to live off of their blackjack profits. Among the most popular articles were " Playing Blackjack as a Business" by Lawrence Revere and "Winning Blackjack" by Stanley Roberts. These brought a new height of popularity for blackjack especially to the casinos in Nevada. With the advent of modern technology, the game of blackjack has found its way beyond the four walls of the casino. With the Internet using software which can be downloaded to personal computers, playing blackjack can now be enjoyed by people worldwide. Without doubt, blackjack will continue to bring fun and thrill to many players for the many years to come. |
